Flush ground installation

Soil preparation

  • Dig a hole with a depth of 11 cm
  • Spread a layer of geotextile on the base of the excavation. This will serve to improve the load distribution of the foundation and to limit the growth of weeds.
  • Make sure that the area is adequately drained, either by means of a slope towards absorbent soils, or, if necessary, by inserting perforated drainage channels. The highly draining Zocchetto system eliminates the need for flush-floor drainage grids, as the water will drain under the floor through the joints. During the design phase, it is essential to consider how the collected water will be managed.

Preparation of the foundation

  • Fill the excavation with 6 cm of gravel (inert material consisting of finely-ground stone, with dimensions of about 4/8 mm).
  • Compact the foundation using a vibrating plate.
  • Excavation edging: if the excavation area is not delimited by existing edges such as sidewalks or walls, it will be necessary to create an appropriate edging using the most suitable material for the project.

Installation of the polystyrene tiles

  • Start the installation making sure that the installation surface is perfectly level. Use guiding strips along which to run a straight edge to obtain a smooth surface.
  • Place the first Zocchetto tile, following the direction indicated in the diagram provided.
  • Continue installing all the polystyrene tiles, moving the guide strips gradually to maintain the level.
  • Important: make sure to leave at least 7.5 cm of space on each side of the floor to allow the system to expand properly.

Positioning of the wooden blocks

  • Once the tiles have been installed, insert a wooden block into each tile.

Filling of the joints

  • Fill the joints between the blocks with the granulate, spreading it in small quantities across the surface.
  • Wash the floor surface using a flat water jet.

Above-ground installation

Preparation of the surface

  • Leveling check: make sure that the surface is sufficiently level. In the presence of obvious depressions, these should be compensated for by using a layer of levelling granulate.

Installation of the polystyrene tiles

  • Start of the installation: lay the first tile of the Zocchetto system, following the direction indicated in the diagram.
  • Continuation of the installation: continue installing all the polystyrene tiles.
  • Important: it is essential to verify that there is sufficient expansion gap around the platform to allow the system to expand.

Positioning of the wooden blocks

  • Insertion of the blocks: once the polystyrene tiles have been installed, insert a wooden block into each tile.

Filling of the joints

  • Fill the joints between the blocks with the granulate, spreading it in small quantities across the surface.
  • Wash the floor surface using a flat water jet.

Warnings and maintenance

Initial system adjustment

  • After about 15 days, the gravel height in the joints will have become significantly reduced. At this stage, spread the remaining gravel across the surface and repeat the spacing and wetting operation.
  • After one month, the flooring system will be fully stable. This small, but necessary, intervention is the customer's responsibility.

Characteristics of the Wood

  • Remember that wood is a living material: its dimensions can vary considerably according to the climatic conditions, so it is essential to ensure a space of at least 7.5 cm on each side of the floor, which must be filled only with gravel, in order to allow for the system to move appropriately.

Change of Colour

  • Wood is subject to changes in colour over time, with a tendency for it to turn grey. This process is natural and is part of the aesthetic characteristics of a wooden floor.

Daily maintenance

  • Sweep the surface: it is recommended to use a rigid bristle sweeping brush to sweep the surface, in order to limit the amount of granulate that is displaced from the joints as much as possible.
  • Washing: wash with running water using aflat-jet hose. In case of stains, apply a neutral soap. Bear in mind that wood is a living material: over time, stains will tend to penetrate into the wooden blocks and become progressively less visible.
